Set your pup up for success and capture memories you’ll treasure forever.

Booking a professional photography session for your dog is an exciting way to celebrate the bond you share. Whether you're getting timeless portraits, fun action shots, or family memories with your four-legged best friend, a little preparation goes a long way to ensure the session is stress-free, smooth, and filled with tail wags.

Here are five tips to help your dog feel confident and ready for their big moment in front of the camera.

1. Exercise Beforehand – But Not Too Much

A walk or light play session before your shoot can help take the edge off any excess energy, especially for high-energy breeds. The goal is to help your dog settle and focus—not to exhaust them. A tired dog may be less responsive, we also don't want to overexert them and have them panting/excessively drooling, so aim for just the right amount of stimulation.

Pro Tip: For puppies or active dogs, a short training session before photos can also help get their minds engaged!

2. Practice Basic Commands

Having a few foundational cues like sit, stay, and come can make a world of difference during your session. Even if your dog isn’t perfectly trained, some consistency in following simple commands helps us capture a variety of looks and poses safely and calmly.

No worries if your dog isn’t perfectly obedient—I work with dogs of all skill levels and always move at their pace.

3. Bring Their Favorite Treats & Toys

Every dog has their “currency,” whether that’s peanut butter, squeaky toys, or a beloved tennis ball. These familiar items help grab their attention and make the experience fun and rewarding. I always bring a stash of goodies too, but having what your dog loves most is a great way to get those perfect expressions and tail-wagging moments.

4. Grooming & Accessories Matter

A quick brush, trimmed nails, and a clean face can elevate your dog’s look in photos. If you’d like to use bandanas, bow ties, or a favorite collar, this is the time to shine! Just be sure any accessories are comfortable and don’t distract your dog during the session. Dogs with hair that covers their eyes should be trimmed before the session! For gear, less is more, thinner leashes, collars etc if you want your pups gear removed in the final images!

If your dog is due for a groom, try to schedule it a few days ahead of time—this gives their coat time to settle and look its best.

5. Stay Calm & Positive

Dogs pick up on our energy, so if you’re relaxed and having fun, your dog will likely follow suit. Think of this as an adventure with your best friend—not a performance. We'll work together to create an environment where your dog feels safe, seen, and celebrated.

Even if things get a little silly (because dogs do keep us humble!), that’s all part of the charm. Some of the best images come from the unscripted moments.

Every dog is different, and that's what makes your session one-of-a-kind. With a little preparation and a lot of love, we’ll create beautiful images that reflect your dog’s personality and the connection you share. If you have any questions before your session, I’m always just a message away.
